Red 2

This time around, the average age of the seven main characters is a tiny bit higher -- 57 years exactly, as compared to 56.714 last time. Well, none of us are getting any younger.

Frank and Sarah about to be shot. Don't worry, they've got it under control.

So for this one, I did a little research. There were two things involved in this film that I really didn't know anything about: the real-life Zodiac killings, and Jake Gyllenhaal. I'd heard of both, but really couldn't pick either one out of a line-up, so to speak. I wasn't even born when the killings began, and (like just about everyone else I know), my history class in school barely made it up to World War II, so my knowledge of anything after the Battle of Britain is a little shaky. I'm not sure we would have covered serial killers anyway.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

It occurred to me while at the theatre that probably a good proportion of the people there had never seen the original Planet of the Apes. They work in one of the most ultra-famous lines from the original at one point, and aside from me, only about five people reacted. This is probably not the reaction the filmmakers might have hoped for, but really, you don't have to know the first film very well.

Commuter traffic is enough to make anyone go ape.

Red isn't a reference to the color, though of course there's a lot of blood. Nor is it a nickname -- there are no redheads in sight. It's actually an acronym, though if you haven't read the graphic novel, I won't spoil the surprise by telling you what it stands for. And yes, this was based on a graphic novel of the same name, by writer Warren Ellis and artist Cully Hamner. I think a couple of people in the audience were a little startled to see the DC logo in the opening credits, actually.

Helen Mirren and one of her impeccable selection of really big guns.
