Amazing Grace

See? Sometimes we do get limited release films around here. At least I think this one's still only in limited release. I'm not sure about that sort of thing anymore. But the theatre was packed. Just as the previews started, every person over sixty-five in the greater metropolitan area showed up, and they took forever to settle down.

John Carter

The movie 79 years in the making! That's usually a very bad sign, of course. As a general rule, the longer a film lingers "in development", the worse it gets. Apparently it resets after three-quarters of a century or so, though, since this one doesn't seem to have suffered much.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

It seems that Ghost Rider is now officially part of Marvel Knights, which is the division that contains all the comics that deal with more mature themes. I get what they mean; it is about demonic possession, good and evil, and all that, but on the other hand, given the level of humor, "mature" doesn't quite seem like the right word. Most of the jokes seem to have been supplied by a 13-year-old boy. Since one of the main characters is a 13-year-old boy, though, maybe they were.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II

So yeah, everyone who was ever in a Harry Potter flick is back, basically, unless the character was killed off, and sometimes even then. I think I got all the important people in the tags, at least, though I'm still working on why Helena Bonham Carter managed such high billing when she hardly says a word, and half the time, when she does, it's when she's really Hermione. They use that disguise potion again, which is no surprise. The only surprising thing is that not everyone uses it all the time.

The Rite

There's a scene where Father Xavier (Ciarán Hinds, Amazing Grace, also soon to be Aberforth Dumbledore in the next Harry Potter flick), while talking to reluctant student Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue), asks him what he thinks of the exorcism class. Now that's not a question you hear every day. Michael's reply is that he doesn't know what to make of it. I mention this because I don't know what to make of the movie, either.
